april desktop calendar

There is a story behind the little bird's nest on my April desktop calendar.

(just click on the image for the 1200 x 800 pixel desktop calendar)

Two weeks ago I trimmed some trees on our property.

Unfortunately the little nest, no bigger than the palm of my hand, was on one of the branches I cut off.

I had a closer look, and that's when I saw it:

A discarded loose end of overlocked cotton thread, that should have found it's way into the dustbin, was used by a bird to make his nest a little cozier. My only consolation after removing the nest is that it's autumn in South Africa and that the little chicks that might have been raised in this nest, are big enough to build their own nests for winter and raise their young when spring arrives in September ...

from our garden

My dogter het hierdie blomme gepluk vir haar kamer.

Ek kon presies 6 blomme pluk vir my huis. Laat ek hulle aan jou voorstel:

hierbo is Mr Lincoln.

Dit werk vir my!

Hier is my plantlys:

- Artista Panarosa (room-en-rooi gestreepte roos!!!)

- Johline

- Just Joey (die knoppe lyk witvoor hulle oopmaak)

- Memoire

- Mr Lincoln

- Papa Meilland (my ma se absolute gunsteling)

- Steve Hofmeyr (ek kon hom nie weerstaan nie)

- Zulu Royal

Watter roos is jou gunsteling?

"Hybrid tea is an informal horticultural classification for a group of roses. They were created by cross-breeding two types of roses, hybrid perpetuals and tea roses. It is the oldest group classified as a modern garden rose.

Hybrid tea flowers are well-formed with large, high-centred buds, supported by long, straight and upright stems. Hybrid teas are the world's most popular type of rose due to their color and flower form. The fact that their flowers are usually borne singly at the end of long stems, makes them popular as cut flowers" - Mirriam Webster dictionary

feeding the ducks

My buurvrou het dit begin. Die oomblik as ek naby die dam kom, begin my eende kwak.

Dit lyk darem of hulle net so baie van regte eende "pellets" as hondekos hou.

Wie weet hoekom hulle in rytjies stap of swem. Klaar geëet, reguit dam toe. Tot more oggend dieselle tyd.

you're still alive!

And twice the size than when I saw you for the first time! It would have been nice of you to let me know (maybe by chewing off a carrot flower stalk and leaving it on my windowsill) that you were still here. 8 months is a very long time to look out the window every day and wonder. Well, maybe not every day...

Do show your funny looking face more often, please. I wouldn't mind getting to know you better. My dad had a green friend just like you when he was a child. His friend lived on the windowsill in their kitchen, for 3 years! And then, sadly, dissappeared forever. I thought I'd lost you twice already. That's enough. Any sign. Thank you, Inwabu*. C
